And don't forget the DNN Index.
The Dave Cam implements the latest in digital camera technology to show you what I'm doing at any moment.
Occassionally, I surf across a site that's really useful -- sometimes even more useful than DNN. I have included those sites here:
- TheTrip.com - Real-time flight tracking. Get the status of flights in progress.
- MapQuest - Instant maps of any place you want -- type in an address, or just a city and state. Also provides driving directions between two points you enter.
- Airborne Express - FedEx - UPS - Package tracking.
- Yahoo! Get Local - A nice collection of information and links pertaining to any local area.
- ATM Locator - Find out where the nearest cash machine is.
- Fabulous Freebies - FREE-way - Weekly Freebie Compilation - Listings of free stuff on the web.
- Switchboard - Four11 - WhoWhere? - Internet Address Finder - Phone, address, and email searches.
- Movie Critic - Recommends movies just for you. Tell it what you thought of various movies and then it compares your answers to other people in its database who have similar interests.
I can hit snooze as much as I want to. That's because I run a small design business, Late Night Publishing, which celebrated its eighth anniversary on September 19th. I also have two happy cats, Sophie and Max (who are more persistent than my alarm clock). In February of 1996 I started a new company, Vandelay Games (not computer games). There are currently four games for sale -- in stores and on the web. As for late-breaking news:
You can reach me at:
- I took an introductory flight lesson on December 11. As the instructor and I were heading down the runway in our little two-seater, he told me to take the controls and pull back gently. I did and we were off! I'm not sure if I'll continue with the lessons, but I sure enjoyed the half-hour flight. (Check back soon for photos.)
- I spent Thanksgiving with Ed & Nancy Young, and about 20 of their closest friends. The highlight of the night (for me) was the annual Scrabble showdown between Nancy and Laurie Bergner. I got in on the game, and was able to use all my tiles on each of my first two turns. I don't expect that to happen again soon. The letters I had were "efhirsy" and "cenopru." Scroll to the end of this page for my words. Although, as Laurie (who's somewhat competitive) pointed out, she would have tied me if it weren't for the bonus points I got.
- I drove to the Mohonk Mountain House in New York for the Wonderful World of Words weekend, held November 7-9. I took off the week before and visited a bunch of people along the way. I put together a little journal, which includes some nice photos.
- Ali and I visited Cathi in
Ft. Collins, Colorado, September 18-22. The weather wasn't that great, but the company made up for it.- I made my television debut on Channel 15 News at Five on August 27. I was interviewed about Vandelay Games while the hosts played a simplified version of Breakdown.
- I had a good time at my 10-year high school class reunion the first weekend in August.
- I started a group called The Madison Wordplayers, which meets monthly for a casual evening of word games.
- My latest encounter with TCI cable made the first paper of '97. You can find out more at my Adventures with TCI page. I also have a Cable Comparison Chart for you to see how good a deal you're getting with your cable service.
- There have been a few newspaper articles about me and the games.

Ali Gharavi's life event of joining Andersen Consulting has taken him from retrospectively temperate Wisconsin to Minnesota, the land of 10,000 (seemingly always frozen) lakes. Calling Uptown, Minneapolis home (or igloo), he has bought a piano, performed as an improvisational actor, spent three months in the Philippines, and got married (one of these facts is not like the others). Currently, he has plans to take a sabbatical leave from the daily toil in the USA, invent a few accessories for bicycles, and cure his travel bug by shock therapy as he leaps over the Atlantic.
